Its raining in Banos

Hola family and friends-
We have finished our experiences at our sites and are now enjoying our time in Banos. We all had a great last week at our sites and were very sad to leave all of the children on Friday.
We made it to Banos last night and woke up this morning to the most beautiful city! Unfortunatly it has been raining all day! We have been making the most of our time here by getting massages and steam baths to relax our bodies and minds before heading to Latacunga tomorrow. If the weather cooperates, we will head to some hot springs tomorrow.
We will update after arriving in Latacunga!
Hope all is well

Back from Otavalo

Hi everyone!
We are back to our sites this week after a nice weekend in Otavalo. We spent the weekend shopping at the local market and visiting a clinic where they use traditional indiginous medicine. Some of us were even given a full medical assessment by a guinea pig!!
We are still working hard this week at our sites preparing presentations and projects in order to share our knowledge of occupational therapy. We are all enjoying our sites and will be sad to leave all the kids on friday. This weekend we will be leaving Quito to travel to Banos for the weekend, and then to Latacunga where we will be helping out in orphanages.
Hope all is well at home!!

Fundacion Hermano Miguel

Jenni, Amanda and Kelsey

Hermano Miguel is an outpatient clinic that has been around for approximately 25 years. The services offered include PT, OT, SLP, massage therapy, chiropractor, and a general family physician. THey are currently in the process of building a new clinic on the site.

The majority of the OT´s patients are adults, however, she does see a few children as well. The typical diagnoses that the occupational therapist treats include CP, CVA, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and developmental delays.

We have had a great oppurtunity to see the differences and similarities between OT here in Ecuador versus OT in the U.S. One difference that we have discovered is that they focus more on a biomechanical (PT) model of practice rather than a more holistic functional approach. One similiarity we found that was encouraging to see was the emphasis on building/having a relationship between therapist and patient.

A couple highlights from the last week that we would like to mention are as follows:

- After spending a few sessions with one man, we finally were able to find out what was meaningful to him. After he revealed that he likes to play cards, we were then able to incorporate this into his therapy. He loved being able to do something he really enjoyed. It was also great for us to see him smile and enjoying his therapy session.

- A connection we made with another patient who had sustained a brain injury was that he really liked numbers. He had previously worked with numbers prior to his accident. We suggested that he try Sudoku to stimulate his brain, and to give him another activity to do instead of spending time watching tv. In addition, this activity gave the OT and us an idea of what his performance level and cognitive level is. He really enjoyed this activity, and again it was rewarding for us to see his positive response to our suggestion.

We hope all is well with everyone at home! Thanks,
Amanda and Kelsey

Fundacion Integrar

Fundacion Integrar

Two of us spent our first day at our site: Fundacion Integrar. This site was amazing! We were greeted this morning with hugs from the patients and students and we knew we were in a geat place.
This site is very small but provides children with schooling and therapy. We have children of all ages going from small children to young adults. The children´s diagnosis range from cerebral palsy, quadriplegia, down syndrome and Autism. They generally have about 10 kids that are there for school all day, but also have patients coming in and out for therapy. This site does not have an Occupational Therapist, so they were very interested in having us there to help them with their children. They are excited for us to work with them and help them with some of the small children who have cerebral palsy.
Today we were fortunate enough to get to go with them to a local pool to assist them with aquatic therapy. We had a great time and found out the three of our clients are training for the special olympics!

We look forward to helping out at this site and can´t wait to update you!

Fundacion Reina De Quito

Nicole, Anna, Jessica and I (Sarah) were assigned to work at the Fundacion Reina De Qutio. This site is a school that works with children 0-5 years old with Downs Syndrome. Melba is the professional that is working at the site with us. To start off our first day at the site, we navigated Quito´s bus sytem. It was a very successful adventure. Upon arrival at the site, each of us were given the opportunity to observe and work with the different age groups including the sessions that involved the parents of the children. Despite our limited knowledge of Spanish we learned a lot about the work the professionals do with the children that attend the school. Currently, the site does not employ an OT so part of our role at the site is to decscribe the role of OT and how it can be implemeted there. Tomorrw we look forward to observing and working with the groups of children we did not get the chance to work with today.
